Abstract
Strategic planning has been introduced progressively in the State of Chile, particularly in regional planning through the Regional Development Strategies (RDS). RDS constitute a strategic instrument, involving all the stages and methodological demands of strategic planning. However, planners and regional decision makers consider RDS to show limited efficiency and li"le binding power.
This article argues in favour of the need of assessing the RDS process and the ex-post evaluation
of the present instrument, particularly, in an applied research on the RDS in three regions of the country. The aim is to have empirical evidence about the potential of the instrument to guide the assessment of regional administration in a scenario of progressive decentralisation and transfer of authority to the regional levels.
